Tomorrow, immigrant advocate groups and 11 members of Congress called for an independent investigation by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) into reports of racial profiling and other questionable practices by Border Patrol agents. Congress members Yvette Clarke, Charles Rangel and Maurice Hinchey signed onto the request for an investigation. -

On late Wednesday morning, over a thousand young people and their families made their way toward St. Mary’s Church on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), the New York State Immigrant Action Fund (NYSIAF), and the New York State Youth Leadership Council (NYSYLC) set up a day-long orientation workshop and free legal clinic for potential applicants of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) new deferred action policy.

The Department of Homeland Security today provided additional information on the deferred action for young people process in preparation for the August 15 implementation date. The New York Immigration Coalition will host a press conference and an orientation for potential applicants on August 15, 2012. Details forthcoming.
