In a major victory for public health, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 today to uphold the key provisions of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), including the “individual mandate,” which requires most Americans to purchase health insurance or pay a fine. Two years since the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the historic health care reform law, the Supreme Court hears arguments on its constitutionality--one of the most significant cases to be heard in decades. At the same time, legislation at the state level that would set up the insurance exchange through which individuals and businesses could obtain health care coverage has yet to be passed.
