DHS Announces Proposed Change to 3- or 10-Year Bar Waiver Processing

The administration announced today a proposal that would allow the Department of Homeland Security to process waivers inside the United States for certain immigrant visa applicants so that the applicants can remain united with their families. The proposed procedure is not expected to go into effect for at least several months.

While Washington, DC, Fails to Act, New Yorkers Push for State Legislation

Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that it would begin to implement the new deportation policy it had announced on August 18th, under which deportation cases currently pending in immigration court will be reviewed and cases deemed “low priority” will be closed. The agency has described as “low priority” those cases involving DREAM-eligible youth, military family members, crime victims, and immigrants with strong family ties.

The New York Immigration Coalition is pleased to learn of a shift in enforcement tactics by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents within 100 miles of the northern border. For years, advocates have raised concerns about the random sweeps conducted by CBP agents on Amtrak trains and Greyhound buses within that 100-mile zone.

Members of the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), joined by Speaker Christine Quinn, City Council Immigration Chair Danny Dromm, parents, community leaders, schools, consulates, and elected officials, converged on the steps of City Hall today to announce the launch of the school-based Family Resource Center initiative (FRC) in each of the five boroughs.

Today, Governor Cuomo issued an executive order providing language assistance services at all state agencies that interact directly with the public. The executive order would cover over 20 agencies, and provides for translation of key documents into six languages, and interpretation services for all languages.

In a full house at Tribeca Cinemas this evening, crowds came out in support of the DREAM Fellowship Program, an initiative of the NYIC in partnership with the Fund for Public Advocacy. The scholarship program will provide 10 exceptional undocumented students with financial support and internship opportunities to help them attend college. After the screening of Entre Nos, about the struggles of an undocumented immigrant mother trying to provide for her children, a post-screening discussion commenced.
