NYIC Denounces Census Citizenship Question, Launches New York Counts 2020 Coalition to Ensure Fair and Accurate Census

Calls new citizenship question on U.S. Census “toxic”

NEW YORK, NY – In response to the news that the 2020 U.S. Census will include a question about citizenship, the New York Immigration Coalition Executive Director Steven Choi issued the following statement:

“A citizenship question on the U.S. Census is toxic– for New York’s four million immigrants, but also for all New Yorkers. This thinly-disguised attack could cost all New Yorkers millions of dollars in federal aid, and strip us from Congressional seats in our delegation. To counter Trump's efforts to politicize a nonpartisan, constitutionally mandated process, New York needs to step up, get organized and make sure all New Yorkers count in 2020. This is our New York and we’re not going to lose a dime to Washington D.C.”

Broad-based community groups, labor leaders, and census experts will announce a state-wide coalition, New York Counts 2020, to ensure a fair and accurate Census that will protect all New Yorkers.
