BREAKING: The NYIC and DREAMers Arrested in DC During Civil Disobedience

WASHINGTON, D.C. - This evening, New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) staff, members, and New York DREAMers were arrested during a demonstration of civil disobedience at the congressional offices of the United States Senate in Washington D.C. NYIC staff members Murad Awawdeh, Vice President of Advocacy, and Carlene Pinto, Manager of Member Engagement NYC, were among those arrested. The arrest came at the end of a series of sit-ins staged at congressional offices throughout the day to demand a clean DREAM Act, lead by the NYIC, United We Dream, National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC), and CASA For All.

Steven Choi, Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition, issued the following statement:

“We stand by our staff, members, the DREAMers, and all of the people across the country who have put their bodies on the line to demand congress do its job and pass a clean DREAM Act before the end of the year. We thank them for their continuous resilience and bravery in the fight to protect our immigrant communities. We will continue to put pressure on our congressional members and senators, and will not rest until a clean DREAM Act is passed.”
