Overview of the Organization
The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) is an umbrella policy and advocacy organization for nearly 200 groups in New York State. We envision a New York state that is stronger because all people are welcome, treated fairly, and given the chance to pursue their dreams. Our mission is to unite immigrants, members, & allies so all New Yorkers can thrive.  We represent the collective interests of New York’s diverse immigrant communities and organizations and devise solutions to advance them; advocate for laws, policies, and programs that lead to justice and opportunity for all immigrant groups; and build the power of immigrants and the organizations that serve them to ensure their sustainability, to improve people’s lives, and to strengthen our state.

Summary of the Position
The Senior Associate will work under the supervision of the Director of Communications at the New York Immigration Coalition to support the organization’s media relations and communications initiatives, as well as our online presence, during this period of rapid response.  This position may be hired at a Manager level depending on the candidate’s experience.
Key Responsibilities
  • Draft  and edit press releases, media advisories, op-eds, letters to the editor, e-blasts, talking points, and other media materials
  • Support the redesign and launch of the organization’s website, www.nyic.org
  • Maintain social media, create digital content, manage accounts and track reach/engagement
  • Coordinate and implement media and communications plans for advocacy campaigns and to support member groups
  • Produce organization’s audio-visual content
  • Work with program staff to craft media strategy
  • Develop and pitch stories, manage press calls, and track media coverage
  • Field media inquiries and maintain relationships with reporters, editorial staff, columnists, hosts and bloggers with guidance from the Director of Communications
  • Support NYIC’s regional teams, including Hudson Valley, Buffalo, and Long Island to enhance our communications reach in those regions
  • Support press conferences and media events
  • Document organizational campaigns, events, rallies, and actions
     
Qualities Sought
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience with communications, particularly media relations or digital and social media
  • Knowledge of immigration policy and / or issues facing immigrant communities
  • Excellent oral, public speaking, and written communications skills
  • Technology savvy and comfort with social media
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple tasks
  • Knowledge of Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese, or another language other than English is a strong advantage
