NYIC Statement on Trumpcare Defeat

The Senate rejected a new, scaled-down Republican plan to repeal parts of the Affordable Care Act early Friday morning.

Claudia Calhoon, Director of Health Policy at the New York Immigration Coalition, responds:

“Congress’ failure to repeal the Affordable Care Act after multiple attempts, all while flouting longstanding norms in the face of opposition, is a testament to the unspeakable damage it would have caused and to the power of peoples’ collective voice. This bill would have made millions of immigrants, whose right to care is already threatened far too often, ineligible for health coverage, including victims of human trafficking, torture, and domestic abuse, and those in the process of applying for asylum. This fight is far from over, and we will continue to hold the line on our hard-won gains. We look forward to working with New York's elected officials to ensure that health care coverage and access is truly open to all."

The New York Immigration Coalition is an umbrella policy and advocacy organization for nearly 200 groups in New York State that work with immigrants and refugees. The NYIC aims to achieve a fairer and more just society that values the contributions of immigrants and extends opportunity to all by promoting immigrants’ full civic participation, fostering their leadership, and providing a unified voice and a vehicle for collective action for New York’s diverse immigrant communities.
