The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) is an umbrella policy and advocacy organization for nearly 200 groups in New York State. Position summary:

With generous support from the Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater NY (KALAGNY), the NYIC has created a position for an Immigration Law and Policy Fellow.  The Fellow will work closely with NYIC's policy and advocacy staff to convene nonprofit organizations serving Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) clients to discuss collaboration and the needs of their communities, analyze trends in immigration policy for their impact on AAPI communities, and collaborate with partner organizations to support Know Your Rights sessions for community members.  The Fellow will also participate in occasional KALAGNY events and update KALAGNY on their work and their findings.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain relations with a range of organizations serving AAPI communities
  • Convene stakeholders on a regular basis
  • Monitor and analyze developments in federal immigration law and policy, as well as immigrant-related policies at the state and local levels to
  • Draft policy pieces, including recommendations for policy makers as well as plain language summaries for partner organizations to use with communities
  • Tailor curriculum for Know Your Rights sessions for AAPI community members, and work with partner organizations to plan and execute sessions
Qualities sought:
  • Recent law graduate with an interest in immigration, immigrant rights, and / or public policy (note that while there might be a possibility of collaborating on an amicus brief, this position will not involve legal services or law practice)
  • Some experience working with AAPI communities, on immigration law, and / or doing public policy advocacy is a strong asset.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and ease with explaining complex legal issues to non-legal audiences
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Knowledge of Korean, Chinese, or another language spoken in AAPI communities is a strong advantage
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment
  • Commitment to social justice
