NYIC Responds to DHS' Decision to Uphold DACA

On Thursday night, the fifth anniversary of the creation of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), the Department of Homeland Security announced that it would not end the program. The administration officially terminated legislation for the DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents).

"After months of senseless and cruel threats, the Department of Homeland Security's decision to maintain DACA is a huge victory for the 800,000 young people who grew up in this country and have legal permission to live here," said Steven Choi, Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition. "Now we need a comprehensive and efficient pathway to citizenship for DREAMers free from needless government red tape. Although the administration has disappointingly abandoned DAPA, this is an important acknowledgement of the values that truly make America great: opportunity and justice for all."

The New York Immigration Coalition is an umbrella policy and advocacy organization for nearly 200 groups in New York State that work with immigrants and refugees. The NYIC aims to achieve a fairer and more just society that values the contributions of immigrants and extends opportunity to all by promoting immigrants’ full civic participation, fostering their leadership, and providing a unified voice and a vehicle for collective action for New York’s diverse immigrant communities.
