The New York Immigration Coalition Applauds Dream Act Introduction In Senate and House

Statement of Ms. Chung-Wha Hong, Executive Director, New York Immigration Coalition:

The dream still lives! The New York Immigration Coalition applauds U.S. Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) in the Senate and Representatives Howard Berman (D-CA), Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA) in the House of Representatives for introducing the DREAM Act (S.729 and H.R.1751).*

This bipartisan legislation creates a path to citizenship for certain immigrant youth who grew up here without legal status. The bill represents a significant step toward repairing our broken immigration system, and we hope it is one step among many.

Too many immigrant children who grew up in the United States, call America home, and want nothing more than to contribute to American society have been relegated to the shadows, forced to bear the burden of our broken immigration system. The DREAM Act provides an example of the kind of practical solution necessary for fixing our immigration system, for the prosperity and good of our nation.

The DREAM Act should no longer be a dream; it should be law. And it should be part of a broader reform of our immigration system that provides a path to citizenship for the nation’s undocumented, addresses future flow of workers, reunites families, and treats families and workers with dignity and respect.

The DREAM Act is a crucial component of that more comprehensive vision of just and humane immigration reform, and we look forward to working with the President and Congress to make that vision real.

*Additional cosponsors of the DREAM Act include Senators Russell Feingold (D-WI), Edward Kennedy (D-MA), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Mel Martinez (R-FL), and Harry Reid (D-NV) in the Senate and Representatives Ahn Joseph Cao (R-LA), John Conyers Jr. (D-MI), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Devin Nunes (R-CA), Jared Polis (D-CO), and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) in the House of Representatives.
