On Today's Federal Court Injunction Against Major Parts of Arizona's SB1070 Immigration Law

July 28, 2010, New York City.  Following is a statement from Ms. Chung-Wha Hong, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition:

We applaud the U.S. District Court of Arizona’s issuance of a preliminary injunction against the most egregious provisions of Arizona’s contemptible law, SB1070, which essentially declares open season on undocumented immigrants, legal immigrants, and anyone who looks or sounds like an immigrant. As these aspects of the law will now not be implemented, pending a final ruling, we urge the president and members of Congress to step up to the plate and do what they need to do to prevent further Arizonas from happening: fix our broken immigration system, so it can’t be used as political fodder by opportunistic politicians.

Americans want a functioning immigration system, and don’t want a country torn apart by fear, frustration, and anger. They want leaders who have courage and vision to do the right thing, to provide real solutions, to move us forward. Arizona goes in exactly the wrong direction; now’s the time to set things right. While we await a final ruling on the Arizona law, we can’t afford to wait any longer for Washington to take on the task it alone can assume: enacting a functioning immigration system that serves the national interest. Congress and the president need to move on immigration reform, including the DREAM Act and AgJobs.
