Community Speaker Series opens the process of choosing the next Speaker of the City Council
Council members join local community organizations to sponsor series of forums

A series of community forums in November, held in each borough, will shed light on what is typically a hidden process of choosing one of New York City’s most powerful leaders: the Speaker of the NY City Council.  On Twitter, follow @NYCSpeakerSeries and use #NextSpeaker.

The next Speaker will be chosen at the beginning of the new session by vote of the Council members; now many of those members have joined together to sponsor this series of events to help them and their communities choose who would best represent them in the role.

The Community Speaker Series will be held before Thanksgiving, allowing an early look at the leading candidates for the role and a chance for many of the newly elected Council members to expose them to their constituents’ questions and concerns prior to pledging their support.

The events are co-sponsored by an array of community organizations, some citywide and others based in each of the boroughs. In each borough, leading community organizations have partnered with one or more incoming members of the Council to organize the locations, audience and questions for the forum.

Community Organizations: ALIGN, Arab American Association of New York,  BOOM! Health, Bronx Defenders, Bronx Health REACH, Bronx Youth Empowerment Program, Brooklyn Movement Center, CASA, Center for Popular Democracy, Chhaya CDC, Community Voices Heard, Citizen Action of NY, Drug Policy Alliance, Faith in New York, La Fuente, Minkwon Center for Community Action, Make the Road NY, NARAL Pro-Choice New York, New Economy Project,  NY Civic Engagement Table, NY Communities for Change, NY Harm Reduction Educators, NEW YORK IMMIGRATION COALITION, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, Northwest Bronx Community & Clergy Coalition, NYHRE, Russian-American Voters Educational League, ROC United, Sisters and Brothers United, South Bronx Community Association, Street Vendor Project, Sustainable South Bronx, Tenants PAC, TWU Local 100, UPROSE, Urban Youth Collaborative, VOCAL-NY, WEACT for Environmental Justice, (list in formation)
