COLLEGE GUIDE WORKSHOP-2/25

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Train-the-Trainer Workshop on the College Guide for Immigrant Parents

Come out and join us at our next train-the-trainer workshop on the College Guide for Immigrant Parents, on Tuesday, February 25th from 9:30-12:30 at the NYIC! This is a great opportunity to learn how to use the Guide to help parents in your communities navigate the college process! This training is FREE to all NYIC members.

The Guide was developed in partnership with many member community organizations and provides immigrant parents with an easy-to-read entry point into a complicated process. The Guide addresses immigrant parents’ specific concerns raised in focus groups conducted across the City with member groups. It presents expert advice in the format of engaging personal stories of immigrant families together with action-oriented guidance that shows parents how to do what is recommended.  The guide is written at the 6th grade reading level and will be available in English, Chinese, Spanish, Bengali, Arabic, & Haitian Creole.

College Guide for Immigrant Parents, Train-the-Trainer Workshop

Tuesday, February 25th, 2014
9:30AM - 12:30PM
The New York Immigration Coalition
137-139 West 25th Street (12th Floor)
Between 6th and 7th Ave

 Breakfast will be served. RSVP required for attendance. To RSVP, please reach out to Tea Tammistu at: ttammistu@thenyic.org

The train-the-trainer will prepare facilitators to train parents to:

  • Understand the basics of financial aid and college selection;
  • Develop self-confidence to achieve 3 concrete things recommended by the college guide:
  1. create a team for support and help
  2. visit some colleges with your children
  3. ask for specialized help from your school or an outside organization
  • Understand that barriers to college for their children are systemic in nature and not isolated personal problems related to their specific family;
  • Develop a sense that, despite the barriers, college is attainable for their family; and
  • View their fellow parents as resources to collectively address the systemic barriers.

Thank you & we look forward to seeing you there!
