Full Steam Ahead! Major Progress in the Senate this Week.

Dear Friends of the NYIC,

What a week! Dozens of immigrant families traveled to DC and sat in on the Senate Judiciary Committee's mark-up of the immigration bill, joined in vigils and rallies, and spoke to members of Congress—and, for the first time in history, DREAMers met with a sitting President of the United States! The NYIC, as coordinator of the statewide New Yorkers for Real Immigration Reform campaign, was proud to be a part of these historic moments.

Two members of the New Yorkers for Real Immigration Reform Campaign, Mehdi Mahraoui, DREAM Fellow at the New York Immigration Coalition, and Angie Kim of the MinKwon Center, a Campaign Steering Committee member, were among the seven family members who met with President Obama and Vice President Biden. This meeting was part of a national effort by the NYIC and Fair Immigration Reform Movement, to bring the voices of immigrant families directly to elected officials and policy makers.

As if that weren’t excitement enough, later on Tuesday, after three weeks of debate on S. 744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, the Senate hearing room erupted into cheers as the Senate Judiciary Committee voted overwhelmingly in favor of the bill by a 13-5 vote. The bill will now move to the Senate floor for a full vote!

During the Senate mark-up process, we kept close communication with Senator Schumer about our recommendations and together with our allies across the country were able to defeat dozens of damaging amendments, preserve the path to citizenship for the undocumented, and in some cases, improved the bill. But it’s clear that we need to continue to fight to preserve family unity and strengthen the bill as it moves forward.

Won’t you help us keep up the momentum to carry the bill across the finish line in the Senate, make sure the House follows suit, and get it to the President’s desk for his signature?
