A New Dawn for the New York Immigration Coalition

For the last several months we have been engaged in a strategic planning process designed to help us chart a path forward for the next five years.

During this time, we have tried to make this process as inclusive and transparent as possible.  To this end, we have spoken to and surveyed our staff, members, board, and funders.  It has included in-depth one-on-one interviews, group discussions, and staff and board worksessions.

I’d like to personally thank all of you who have given so freely of your time and ideas. Your input has been invaluable and can be seen on every page and in every strategy.

We are excited to share the fruits of this labor with you today. And given the new political climate after the election, the timing could not be more prescient and critical.

Our Vision: The New York Immigration Coalition envisions a New York State that is stronger because all people are welcome, treated fairly, and given the chance to pursue their dreams.

Our Mission: Unite immigrants, members & allies so all New Yorkers can thrive

Our Values: Inclusive & Representative * Fair & Just * Accountable & Trusted

We also affirmed that the NYIC interprets the word "immigrant" broadly to encompass immigrants, refugees, and asylees, and to welcome all newcomers to New York. To deliver on our new mission, we have identified five strategic priorities moving forward:

ONE: Galvanize members and allies to make significant progress on a statewide policy agenda that improves the day-to-day lives of New York's immigrants.

TWO: Significantly expand our presence throughout New York to better represent its regions and increase statewide political power.

THREE: Foster success of New York's newcomers by promoting immigrant integration policies, and work with members and allies to implement them.

FOUR: Improve the capacity and effectiveness of our members and the immigrant-serving landscape as a whole.

FIVE: Build a strong and sustainable foundation for NYIC as an organization.

Why do we feel this way and what does it mean for you?

  • Our members will have more resources, connections and guidance to drive their own work
  • Our allies will have more ways to connect with us around issues of common interest
  • Our staff will have the time, structure and freedom to focus on what matters most
  • Our funders will see more opportunities to partner with us to expand our impact
  • Our immigrants will have what they need to feel more welcomed, safe, and integrated into their community
  • Our fellow New Yorkers will see clearly how when immigrants thrive, we all thrive.

We welcome your feedback and your input. But most of all, we welcome your partnership. This plan is not just words on a page -it is a living, breathing document that we hope will propel us all forward, setting the tone, not only for where we as an organization plan to go but where we as a community, as a state, and as a people must go, if we are all to thrive.

Onward and Upward,

Steven Choi
