Coalition Expresses Outrage at Arrest of DACA Recipient, Daniel Medina Ramirez

Vows to Fight to Protect New York’s DACA Recipients and All Other Immigrants from ICE Enforcement & Raids

Yesterday, news surfaced that Daniel Ramirez Medina, a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient, was arrested and detained by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Friday, February 10th. Both Daniel and his father were swept up in an ICE enforcement operation. ICE has claimed that Daniel is a “self-admitted gang member” who is a “risk to public safety,” despite that fact that Medina has no record, and was vetted and approved twice by the Department of Homeland Security for DACA. News reports state that Daniel was repeatedly pressured by agents to falsely admit his gang affiliation.

The following is a statement from Steven Choi, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition:

“Since week one of the Trump Presidency, the Administration has stepped up its attack on our country’s immigrant communities, including the enforcement actions that swept up nearly 700 immigrants this past weekend. The case of Daniel Medina is particularly egregious because he is one of 750,000 young people who came out of the shadows, signed up for DACA, and entered into a contract with the government to be protected against deportation – simply because he wanted to fully contribute to the country he calls home.

“And now we find that that trust is being completely broken. Shame on ICE and the Department of Homeland Security for using such abusive tactics in pursuit of a pointless goal. The NYIC vows to fight to protect the rights of all of New York’s immigrants, including DACA recipients, from enforcement activities that terrorize our communities, do nothing to ensure public safety, and wreak havoc on our economy, society and communities.”
