Summary of the Position

The Communications Fellow will work under the supervision of the Senior Manager for Communications at the New York Immigration Coalition to support the organization’s media relations and communications initiatives, as well as our online presence, during this period of rapid response.  This is initially a three-month position, with a possibility of becoming permanent depending on organizational needs and funding.

 

Key Responsibilities
  • Writing and editing press releases, media advisories, op-eds, letters to the editor, e-blasts, talking points, and other media materials
  • Supporting team leading redesign of the organization’s website, www.nyic.org
  • Maintaining social media, creating digital content, managing accounts and tracking reach/engagement
  • Coordinating and implementing media and communications plans for advocacy campaigns
  • Producing organization’s audio-visual content
  • Working with program staff to craft media strategy
  • Developing and pitching stories, managing press calls, and tracking media coverage
  • Field media inquiries and maintain relationships with reporters, editorial staff, columnists, bookers, hosts and bloggers with guidance NYIC’s senior communications manager
  • Supporting NYIC’s regional teams, including Hudson Valley, Buffalo, and Long Island to enhance our communications reach in those regions
  • Supporting press conferences and media events
  • Documenting organizational campaigns, events, rallies, and actions

 

Qualities Sought
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience with communications, particularly media relations or digital and social media
  • Knowledge of immigration policy and / or issues facing immigrant communities
  • Excellent oral, public speaking, and written communications skills
  • Technology savvy and comfort with social media
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple tasks
  • Knowledge of Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese, or another language other than English is a strong advantage
