Education Updates on ESSA
As we head into spring, New York State’s work on the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is gearing up! ESSA was signed into law by President Obama at the end of 2015 and replaces No Child Left Behind. It governs how schools are held accountable for educating our students.
While the new administration and Congress are expected to change the Obama Administration’s rules for how states implement the law, we do not expect the law itself to be undone because it was the result of bipartisan agreement in Congress. New York’s State Education Department is still moving forward with creating its plan to meet ESSA’s requirements.
There are some important ways for NYIC members to plug in now:
- Regional meetings to get community input on key questions
- A survey from our State’s education department
The NYIC has resources to help community members engage. For more information on the regional meeting near you or to get involved, please contact Adriana Lovera at firstname.lastname@example.org!
