The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) is an umbrella policy and advocacy organization for nearly 200 groups in New York State. We envision a New York state that is stronger because all people are welcome, treated fairly, and given the chance to pursue their dreams. We represent the collective interests of New York's diverse immigrant communities and organizations and devise solutions to advance them; advocate for laws, policies, and programs that lead to justice and opportunity for all immigrant groups; and build the power of immigrants and the organizations that serve them to ensure their sustainability, to improve people's lives, and to strengthen our state.

Position Overview
The Chief of Staff is a new position created to oversee day-to-day management of NYIC's highly talented program, policy, and advocacy staff. As a strategist, consultant and implementer, the successful candidate will ensure streamlined activities within the NYIC based on the organization's priorities. The Chief of Staff will work closely with program staff leads to ensure focus on organizational and programmatic goals, fulfillment of grant deliverables, strong human resources support, and maintenance of high quality work across the organization. The Chief of Staff will also represent the Executive Director in high-level meetings and speaking engagements as needed.

Reports to: President & CEO

Key Responsibilities
Organization

  • Works with President & CEO and NYIC senior leadership team to provide direction on key organizational activities and adherence to strategic plan priorities
  • Assists the President & CEO in facilitating effective decision-making
  • Ensure strong internal, cross-team collaboration
  • Coordinate the execution of strategic initiatives
  • Ensure successful program and team goal-setting, progress, and accountability
  • Serves as spokesperson for NYIC when necessary

Relationship Management

  • Works with VPs of Advocacy, Policy and Development & Communications to ensure strong relationships with NYIC members, elected officials, and stakeholders for development and communications purposes
  • Represents the Executive Director and organization in high-level meetings and speaking engagements as needed

Management

  • Coordinates with HR Manager and Executive Vice President on staffing and recruitment
  • Ensures all staff issues are addressed properly, efficiently and judiciously, and keeps track of progress until resolved

Qualities Sought:

  • At least 5-7 years of management experience, preferably in a social justice setting
  • Strong management skills and experience, particularly a commitment to goal-oriented approaches and clarity in roles
  • Deep understanding of effective and efficient systems and internal structures
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work strategically and collaboratively across teams
  • Action-oriented person with ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail
  • Understanding of immigration policy, issues affecting immigrants and approach necessary for coalition work is important
  • Proficiency in Spanish or another language in addition to English is a strong advantage
