Mayor Bloomberg Supports New York State DREAM Act

Gives New Hope to New York’s Immigrant Communities

Thursday, January 12, 2012. (New York, NY) The following is a statement from Ms. Chung-Wha Hong, Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition:

“Today, in his State of the City address, Mayor Bloomberg announced his support for the New York State DREAM Act, which would help young New Yorkers, regardless of status, apply for state-sponsored college loans, grants, and scholarships. He’s right when he says that it is in our city’s best interest to allow all youth to become productive members of society, and he’s right when he says that we cannot afford to wait for Washington.  We hope that this will set an example for Congress as we continue to actively push for the federal DREAM Act as well. We applaud Mayor Bloomberg on his commitment to equal access to financial aid and look forward to working with him to make this dream a reality.

“And kudos to the Mayor for supporting an increase in the minimum wage. So many New Yorkers, including immigrants, work in industries that fuel the city’s economy but that pay minimum wage. By raising the minimum wage, the Mayor will help raise the standard of living for immigrant families and communities.”
